Workshop Assistant / Artisan

Hours37.5 hours per week, 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Paid overtime mandatory during peak production times.
PayFrom £24,784.50 per year. National Living Wage, hourly paid on monthly payroll.
LocationAberaman Industrial Estate, a 10 minute walk from Cwmbach train station. Workshop based; this role cannot be carried out remotely.

To assist in our workshop's production of handmade homeware products. Many aspects of the manufacturing process will be carried out in this role, from working with raw materials to the finishing of products to a very high standard.

About us

We are a handmade gothic home décor business hailing from the South Wales Valleys. A family owned and run business with a team of Artisans working from our Aberaman based workshop. We design and manufacture unique homeware products and distribute worldwide. We're looking to expand our team by welcoming another Workshop Assistant/Artisan to our manufacturing/production team on the workshop floor.

The role

Full time, permanent position with a probation period of 4 months.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Working in a high-volume, fast-paced workshop environment
  • Production processes; making homeware products in volume from start to finish (using machinery and power tools)
  • Working with and understanding raw materials (resin, plaster)
  • Hand preparation of products; sanding and preparing them for the painting stage
  • Spray painting and hand painting of products
  • Hand finishing and painting of products, final touches and assembly

  • Ability to understand and follow health and safety guidelines, operating procedures and protocols
  • Strong team player that is very aware of their surroundings and others
  • A strong work ethic and a high level of care and pride in the work they produce
  • The ability to learn and operate in a fast-paced, busy environment. We are a very busy workshop and growing business, so adaptability is essential
  • Capability to excel at multi-tasking in a role where several processes are being carried out
  • A 'can-do' attitude. The glass is half-full here!
  • A strong eye for detail is critical
  • High energy; this role requires someone to work with pace whilst maintaining standards
  • No fear of getting your hands dirty
  • Able to work as part of a small team with excellent time management, working to time-based schedules
  • Ability to safely use power tools and workshop machinery (training is provided)
  • Practical, reliable, flexible; as we are a small, hard working team of Artisans these are important attributes to us

Experience you'll need

  • Experience in a field where your skill set can be transferred (as per the key skills above)
  • Working within a small team, understanding the importance of time management and of communicating efficiently to achieve shared goals
  • Working to time-based schedules and meeting KPIs
  • Experience in a very hands-on, active role. This is not a desk job; you will be stood and constantly on the move between stations in the workshop, and manual handling is carried out daily
  • Working in a busy environment where multi-tasking is key
  • A role that required a keen eye for detail and consistently high standards of quality
  • Working in an environment that required you to tidy and clean as you work

Full training will be given by our experienced and highly skilled team, so you do not need relevant experience in making or manufacturing to apply, though any previous experience may be advantageous. A transferable skill set and real enthusiasm to learn are key to excelling in our team.
