Elwyn Gargoyle Corbel Shelf
Long before they became symbols of gothic romance, gargoyles were working architecture. Carved into the stonework of medieval cathedrals across Europe, they served a practical purpose but their makers gave them something more than function. They were watchers. Protectors set into the fabric of sacred buildings, their monstrous forms believed to ward off the evil spirits that lurked beyond the church walls. The more unsettling the creature, the greater its power to repel.
The word itself comes from the Old French gargouille (throat) a nod to the water that once poured from their open mouths at Notre-Dame, Chartres, and Westminster. But stripped of their practical role, the gargoyle endured. It outlasted the rain, the reformation, the centuries. It became something purely symbolic: a sentinel, a threshold guardian, a creature that belongs to the space between the sacred and the profane.
